ALFALFA HI Content and Star Formation in Virgo Cluster Early-Type Dwarfs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Early-type dwarfs dominate cluster environments, yet their formation and evolutionary histories remain unclear. The ALFALFA (Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA) blind survey is providing a census of HI in galaxies of all types in a range of environments. Here we report on ALFALFA results for Virgo Cluster earlytype dwarfs between declinations of 4 and 16 degrees. Less than 2% of the Virgo early-type dwarf population is detected, compared to 70-80% of the Im/BCD dwarf population. Most of the dwarfs detected in HI show evidence for ongoing or recent star formation. Early-type galaxies with HI tend to be located in the outer regions of the cluster and to be brighter. Early-type dwarfs with HI may be undergoing morphological transition due to cluster environmental effects.

Galaxy Populations and Evolution in Clusters Iv: Deep Hi Observations of Dwarf Ellipticals in the Virgo Cluster
We present in this paper the deepest Arecibo HI observations of Virgo cluster dwarf ellipticals (dEs) taken to date. Based on this data we argue that a significant fraction of Virgo cluster dEs recently underwent evolution. Our new observations consist of HI 21-cm line observations for 22 classified dE galaxies with optical radial velocities consistent with membership in the Virgo cluster. Clus...
متن کاملUv Properties of Early-type Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We study the UV properties of a volume limited sample of early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster combining new GALEX far(1530 Å) and near-ultraviolet (2310 Å) data with spectro-photometric data available at other wavelengths. The sample includes 264 ellipticals, lenticulars and dwarfs spanning a large range in luminosity (MB ≤ -15). While the NUV to optical or near-IR color magnitude relations...
متن کاملGalaxy Populations and Evolution in Clusters I: Dynamics and the Origin of Low-Mass Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
Early-type dwarfs are the most common galaxy in the local universe, yet their origin and evolution remain a mystery. Various cosmological scenarios predict that dwarf-like galaxies in dense areas are the first to form and hence should be the oldest stellar systems in clusters. By using radial velocities of early-type dwarfs in the Virgo cluster we demonstrate that these galaxies are not an old ...
متن کاملThe Colors of Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy Globular Cluster Systems , Nuclei and Stellar Halos
We present the results of a Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 F555W and F814W survey of 69 dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters and Leo Group. The V − I colors of the dE globular clusters, nuclei, and underlying field star populations are used to trace the dE star-formation histories. We find that the dE globular cluster candidates are as blue as the metal-poor globular c...
متن کاملThe relationship between gas content and star formation rate in spiral galaxies . Comparing the local field with the Virgo cluster
Context. Despite many studies of the star formation in spiral galaxies, a complete and coherent understanding of the physical processes that regulate the birth of stars has not yet been achieved, nor a unanimous consent was reached, despite the many attempts, on the effects of the environment on the star formation in galaxies member of rich clusters. Aims. We focus on the local and global Schmi...
